Abstract
The study examines the effect of compensation and work environment on employee performance
among public secondary school teachers in Kano, Nigeria. The role of work motivation. The
population of the study consists of 11834 teachers and a sample size of 372 was drawn from the
population. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Both descriptive and
inferential statistics were used for the analysis. The findings revealed that there is a significant
positive relationship between promotion, training and organizational culture on employee
performance, reward has no significant positive relationship with employee performance, work
motivation was found to mediate the relationship between promotion, training, organizational
culture and employee performance. Therefore, the study recommends that employee welfare
should be given considerable attention, and teachers should be promoted as at when due. In
addition, training should be provided so as to acquire new skills and new strategies which will
enhance teachers’ performance.
