Abstract

Knowledge of a firm's environment and environmental issues can assist in making effective management decisions and meeting environmental and consumer health requirements. This study examines whether an affirmative relationship exists between environmental accounting disclosure and firm performance measured by return on assets, Tobin‟s q, and economic value added of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study population comprises all listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria across different sectors, totaling forty-six (46), while a sample of forty-three was used, excluding firms with incomplete data. The study employed a correlational research design to analyze data from 2019 to 2022 using the OLS and Panel data regression analysis models. Findings revealed that environmental accounting disclosure has a statistically significant relationship with Return on Asset (ROA) but not with Tobin Q and Economic Value Added (EVA, both market-based financial performance measures. The study recommends that regulatory agencies in Nigeria, such as the SEC, should mandate firm managers to disclose their environmental accounting performance. This is crucial to ensure that firms are not disadvantaged if their environmental accounting disclosure does not affect the market value of their shares, as the market value is a more realistic measure of financial performance for investors
